Research has shown that children do not learn best by sitting still. Although students may look like they’re paying attention, their mind (and focus) is elsewhere.
Fidget toys offer students an outlet for excess energy. It allows them to harness their energy and apply it to their learning. Sometimes the most challenging task can be sitting still.
Mequon Grade School offered their grade 3 students the choice of where they wished to sit. Students were offered standing desks and wobble stools. Many students found they were able to focus better.
Fidget toys are not toys. They are tools to help students learn. Having the options and awareness to reflect on individuals’ learning styles is an important component of education.
